Ocular therapeutics for optometrists
Convenor: Harry Rosen
Description:
The expansion of eye care services within the district health system has revealed gaps in eye care service delivery in the country, especially in remote areas. While there is expansion of refractive services to several remote areas, specialised ocular therapeutic services lie predominantly at the secondary and tertiary levels of care, thereby resulting in poor access to services. Therapeutic services have recently been added to the variety of services provided by optometrists. Speakers will update delegates on drugs currently in use for inflammatory eye disease, ethical issues associated with the use of therapeutic drugs and emergency care associated with therapeutic drug use.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the ethical issues involved in the provision of therapeutic services by optometrists
- Explain the procedures they will administer in emergencies arising from therapeutic drug use
